How to Wear a Lumbar Support
If you are one of those people who are constantly plagued by back pain, then you may be thinking of using back support to alleviate your pain.
While this is probably the easiest way for you to get relief from back pain, you have to take note that wearing back support improperly can lead to even more discomfort and pain.
Therefore, you may want to take time to read through these instructions on how to properly wear back support before you take your device out of its box.
Make sure that you do not suck in your stomach before putting on back support as this can cause some breathing difficulties once you have the device in place. You should also be careful not to stick your stomach out because this will cause your device to be too loose. Rather, you need to stand in a normal and comfortable position as you prepare to put on your back support.
Find the centre of your support device and then align this with your spine. There is usually a marking of some sort that indicates which side of the device should be up.
Wrap the device around your back, making sure that the straps are on the outside. Keeping the centre of the support aligned with your spine, pull the main straps together and then secure them into place. Make sure that the straps are held firmly together without being too tight.
Most back support devices will have one more strap on each side for added stability. Pull each of these straps towards the front and secure them into place as well. Again, make sure that you secure them just firmly enough for adequate support, but not too tight.
Now, check how the support works when you sit down. If you find it a bit difficult or uncomfortable to sit down, then you may have placed the device too low. You will have to adjust its placement and go through the first four steps once more. If this is your first time to wear back support, then you may have to keep repeating these five steps a number of times before you finally get it right. Remember that it is important to wear back support in a manner that provides the most stability and comfort.
You may also need to wear back support even when lying in bed. If so, then you’ll have to learn the proper way of getting into bed while wearing back support. First, you need to sit squarely on the edge of your bed. Now, swing your legs up and onto the bed at the same time and then slowly lie down.
When getting out of bed, you need to push yourself up with your arms and swing both legs over the side of your bed before standing up. Remember that getting back pain relief isn’t all about wearing back support, but also about wearing it right.

I hear this word a lot and really don’t fully understand what it means. At wikipedia.com it means In anatomy, lumbar is an adjective that means of or pertaining to the abdominal segment of the torso, between the diaphragm and the sacrum (pelvis).So why do we need lumbar support? Does everyone need Lumbar Support?There are several muscles in the low back that assist with rotation, flexibility and strength. These muscles are susceptible to injury, especially while lifting heavy objects, or lifting while twisting. A low back muscle strain can be extremely painful but will usually heal within a few days or weeks.The lumbar portion of the spine bears the most body weight and also provides the most flexibility, a combination that makes it susceptible to injury and wear and tear over time. This is why low back pain is so prevalent.In fact the lumbar is what causes man to be standing erect as opposed to other mammals. These provide the human body with flexibility and necessary rotation.It is this lumbar portion which gets stressed out so much often and of course is prone to injuries as well. There should be maximum care taken for the lumbar area, since that is also what causes us to be standing erect.In fact in almost all the human beings the tendency is that they do not have a correct posture and that causes the lumber to injured or sprained and people then need lumbar support products.Car lumbar support is also needed when you are driving for long hours and if you are driving long distance then make sure that you have the car lumbar support with you.People who work on computers all day long also need to have the ergonomically designed chairs to reduce the disc pressure on the lumbar area. The chairs should have a lumber support area of 5 cm and the angle between the seat and the backrest should be 120 degrees. The best position to reduce back pressure is the standing position but that is not the best way to work so you need to very careful about your lumbar region and the kind of chair you use.Good care of your lower back area is important and that may mean having a lumber support pillow where and whenever you sit for long periods of time if you don’t have a lumbar supported chair or seat. Also, if you lift heavy objects a lumbar support belt should be worn.Bottom line is that your lumbar area of your back is very important to you and should be protected. A new AquaHab Physical Therapy case study documents the advantages of aquatic therapy for multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms, according to patient results recorded by the Greater Philadelphia physical therapy practice. These findings support a number of earlier research studies detailing the benefits of aquatic and physical therapy for patients with MS.
According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, MS is a chronic and often debilitating disease that attacks the central nervous system, with symptoms ranging from mild (such as numbness of the limbs) to severe (including paralysis and loss of vision). The value of aquatic therapy for patients with multiple sclerosis is recognized by the National MS Society, which reports, ?The unique qualities of water provide exceptional benefits to people with MS. Water helps people with MS move in ways they may not be able to on land.?(1)
Numerous studies have also highlighted the benefits of aquatic therapy for individuals with MS. A recent study from Denmark concluded that exercise therapy, including aquatic therapy, has the potential to create a positive effect on MS fatigue.(2) A separate study from Iran focused exclusively on aquatic therapy, and determined that ?aquatic exercise has enhanced the aspects of multiple sclerosis patients? quality of life.?(3)
Les Littman, President and CEO of AquaHab, LP, says the therapists at his practice?s clinics have reported success in using both aquatic and physical therapy treatments for patients with MS. He cites a recent case study detailing the effectiveness of aquatic therapy for a 37-year-old female patient with multiple sclerosis.
The subject of the AquaHab Physical Therapy case study was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS in 2006 and had experienced multiple flare-ups since then. She had previously undergone land-based physical therapy treatment, and opted to pursue aquatic therapy to facilitate further progress and relief from her symptoms. Her complaints included: loss of balance and frequent falls (approximately three times per week); coordination issues when walking; overall weakness, which was especially pronounced in the upper extremities; difficulty with stairs and prolonged standing (more than 30 minutes); fatigue when walking 15 minutes or longer; and an inability to kneel.
The patient?s treatment plan included skilled aquatic physical therapy two times per week for seven weeks. The treatments involved a series of exercises performed in the 78- to 80-degree pool at the aquatic fitness center, including deep-water walking and trunk stabilization exercises, as well as shallow-water exercises focused on improving her flexibility, range of motion, strength, gait training, balance, and endurance. The exercise program also encompassed pelvic stability exercises (dynamic lumbar stabilization); quadriceps, gluteal, and hamstring strengthening using either paddles, kickboards, or cuff weights; heel and toe raises, squats, and standing straight leg raises; and calf, hamstring, quad, and hip flexor stretching.
At the conclusion of her aquatic therapy treatment program, the patient demonstrated improvements in her range of motion, strength (including abdominals), gait, and balance. She also reported a decreased frequency in falls, with no falls in the two-and-a-half weeks prior to discharge. She regained the ability to kneel, and was able to perform daily activities ? such as walking up and down stairs, walking her dog one or two miles per day, and standing for nearly 60 minutes ? without fatigue.
?All of the evidence points to the effectiveness of aquatic exercises for MS patients, particularly as part of a treatment plan developed by licensed physical therapists. Our own experience has shown that those suffering from MS can make remarkable strides when participating in an aquatic physical therapy program,? remarked Littman. ?The natural properties of water make it an ideal medium for those with physical limitations. Its buoyancy provides support for weak limbs and promotes muscle relaxation, while its resistance helps build muscle strength. Those with balance and coordination issues find it easier ? and safer ? to exercise in water. In addition, those who have heat sensitivity find it more comfortable to exercise in the cool waters of a temperature-controlled pool.?
