If you have a back injury or are recovering from back surgery, you know it can be a debilitating experience. Most people don’t know how important their back is until they injure it in some way, and then the simplest chores become painful events.

A back brace can help alleviate symptoms from minor back spasms to major surgical procedures, but it’s important to get the back brace that’s best suited to your needs and condition.

A back brace can be used as mere support or as a maximum stabilizing device that’s meant to hold the entire upper torso in a straight line. Many people recovering from back injuries (caused by sports or auto accidents) wear a full, hard shell back brace that reaches from the sacral area of the lower back up to the underarms. Some also have a neck brace that connects to the entire assembly to provide maximum support for broken necks and backs. For those kinds of injuries, a doctor will most certainly decide which back brace will best suit your needs and offer you maximum mobility. Other conditions that aren’t so severe will require less support.

A foam or cloth-type back brace can be used to help relieve symptoms of lower back pain and minor injuries. A doctor will often suggest the use of a back brace for those who suffer from sciatica and other neuromuscular complaints. In these cases, a back brace will help ease the pain of symptoms and offer additional support for movement. These days, a back brace is often made of foam-like material that is soft to the skin and yet provides firm support for mild to moderate lower back pain. The shape of a lower back brace allows for the curvature at the base of the spine and won’t ‘ride up’ like most other, ‘old-fashioned’ back brace models and styles. This type of brace will stay in place, providing the required support.

Another popular type of back brace is a medical support back brace that comes with metal reinforcement strips down the back. This brace reaches from the midline buttocks area all the way up to the middle of the shoulder blades and offers maximum support for those suffering from spondylolysis, or disintegration of a vertebra and other spinal conditions. The tightness and pressure of this type of back brace can be worn under clothing and is adjustable. The wearer can stand and sit and the anatomical fit makes it available for both men and women. The best thing about this back brace is that it stays in place like it’s supposed to, which makes it almost invisible to the casual observer. People suffering from discopathy, which is any disease that affects the intra vertebral bone structure, and osteoporotic lumbar impression fractures, as well as those recovering from surgery, can also wear this type of back brace.

A back brace doesn’t have to be big and bulky to provide both protection and support for wearer. Today, materials used in the creation of a back brace are lightweight and allow for your skin to ‘breathe’. So, when the doctor prescribes a back brace, don’t automatically think “immobile”. Instead, think of “soft yet firm, adjustable and comfortable.”

Description(Physical Details): Back brace with leather padding and steel framework. Designed to fit the dimensions of an adolescent child, the brace is composed of three thick steel bars to which leather is clamped at the bottom and fitted with leather straps set with adjustable holes. The steel frame of the brace can be lowered or raised to fit with the use of screws. Back side of brace has an extra pad attached to the steel piece which would fit behind the spine, and the top of the device is fitted with a padded leather chin rest and head rest, which can also be adjusted through the use of screws.

Symptoms of a Bulging Disc in the Neck

A bulging disc in the neck, or cervical area of the spine, won?t necessarily cause pain. In fact, millions of people have the condition and never know it. The misshapen portion of the disc wall usually must compress the spinal cord or a nerve root for a bulging disc in the cervical spine to cause symptoms, which could include:

? Localized pain in the cervical region
? Headaches
? Radiating pain down the shoulders, arms, and hands
? Possible tingling and/or numbness that travels down the arms or hands
? Muscle weakness, cramps, and/or spasms in the neck, shoulders, and arms

In addition, a bulging disc in the neck might also cause severe body weakness or paralysis. Furthermore, if the tough outer wall of a disc tears and irritates the tiny nerves that feed into it, pain in the disc itself may result.

Treatments

Your doctor may recommend a regimen of conservative, or non-invasive, methods to begin treating a bulging disc in the neck.

For example, he or she may suggest that you take over-the-counter or prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen. Starting physical therapy with a trained professional may also help you manage symptoms. Physical therapy could include low impact exercises for increased blood flow and weight control, strength training workouts to improve core muscle strength, and body mechanics analysis and correction to improve posture and spinal alignment. Additional conservative treatments might involve the use of cold or heat therapies, to reduce inflammation and ease muscle tension, respectively.

Is Surgery An Option?

Undergoing a surgical procedure to treat a bulging disc in the neck is rarely necessary. Many medical professionals agree that, in the majority of cases, bulging disc symptoms will subside after several weeks or months of conservative treatments. Your doctor may only ask you to consider a surgical procedure if non-invasive treatments have failed to relieve your pain and/or other symptoms, and your symptoms have become so severe that they interfere with your ability to function in your daily life.

Learning More about Bulging Discs

One of the best ways to understand and find relief from the symptoms of a bulging disc in your neck is to thoroughly educate yourself about the condition and how it develops. As mentioned above, symptoms may occur when displaced disc material compresses a nerve root or the spinal cord, but how does this bulge occur? There are several causes associated with the development of a bulging disc; however, the main cause is usually age. As we grow older, the intervertebral discs begin to succumb to the constant pressures of a body that?s standing, sitting, walking, running, twisting, lifting, and performing the everyday tasks of life. Sandwiched in between two vertebrae, each disc is continually pressed on both sides in various directions, and this takes a toll on the structural integrity of the disc. Eventually, the disc can press out beyond its normal borders, almost like a hamburger that?s too large for its bun.

The resulting nerve pain from a bulging disc can range from mild to severe, but can often radiate along the length of the affected neural structure. Consulting with your physician, as well as researching the condition and your specific symptoms, may help you discover techniques that can allow you to manage your bulging disc symptoms and avoid future flare ups.
